Editing Updown for PBS Apr. 11th, 2011 @ 08:00 pm
[info]mcb78rpm
I'm wondering what people think of the editing that was done of the new Upstairs Downstairs for PBS. If you've seen both versions on the BBC and Masterpiece, you'll see that a few clips were taken out for the American audience. The plot didn't seem hurt by editing but still there was a nice little 3 minutes taken out, near the beginning and then again near the end.

The first shows Rose walking around the still empty and unmodernized house (which I particularly enjoyed). The second is Rose telling Lady Holland that her mother in law has already beat her to formally hiring Rose as housekeeper.

PBS has done this before as has A&E with shows like The House of Eliott and even the hugely successful 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice. Those must have been to insert commercials on A&E, but you wonder, aren't there British commercial breaks too? As for PBS, the editing seems to come in so they can advertise upcoming shows on Masterpiece as well as telling us about the next Antiques Roadshow we get to see the next day.

Ian Wylie's report from the BFI screening Dec. 17th, 2010 @ 06:04 pm

Ian Wylie's report from the BFI screening on 15 December. He's posted some highlights from the Q&A panel. And some new promotional pictures.

16/12/10 The Guardian: More on Downton Abbey vs. Upstairs Downstairs following some comments made by Jean Marsh on The One Show and Hugh Bonneville's replies to her on Twitter.
17/12/10 The Daily Mail: The same, with screencaps from Hugh Bonneville's Twitter and a table listing the Downton-UpDown similarities.
17/12/10 This is Nottingham: Interview with Jean Marsh from the set in Cardiff.
The series starts with Rose wandering through the mess the town house has become after six years of standing derelict.

It's an emotional moment for Rose and Marsh.

She says: "I can't think about coming back without feeling tearful, not bad tearful but just emotional. The past is there, exquisitely recreated, and it's startlingly upsetting to see the house where I lived for five years, and was Rose for 35 years, looking a mess."

Speaking from the set in Cardiff, the actress urges viewers to "gloss over" the fact that in real time, Marsh is 25 years older, but for her character, only six have passed.

She points out she "didn't age in the original series".

"We just jogged along and somehow 25 years passed," she laughs.

18/12/10 The Daily Mail: As Upstairs Downstairs returns after 35 years, JEAN MARSH takes a nostalgic trip back - and introduces the sexy new cast

» ROSE BUCK IS BACK!
New sequel to Upstairs, Downstairs in production!

The maid in TV drama Upstairs Downstairs will be returning to our screens – having risen to the position of housekeeper.
Jean Marsh will reprise her role as Rose Buck, 34 years after she last appeared in the series.
Miss Marsh, who originally played a lowly servant working in 165 Eaton Place, will return to the Belgravia home of the wealthy Bellamy family.

The original series followed the family from 1903 to 1930 and ran on ITV from 1971 to 1975.
It was the brainchild of Miss Marsh and Dame Eileen Atkins, who is also set to appear in the new BBC One series, due to start filming in the spring.
Miss Marsh told the Telegraph: ‘If you had told me 35 years ago that I would be playing Rose again – for the BBC – I think I’d have had a good giggle.’
The actress, who won an Emmy award for her portrayal of Rose, will benefit from improved technology in her housework duties, but is anticipating some hiccups along the way.

She said: ‘Rose will have much more help in this one. There’ll be sweeping machines and washing powders and things. I can see disasters when it doesn’t work – when the Hoover explodes.’
Written by Heidi Thomas, who wrote the BBC’s recent adaptations of Cranford and Ballet Shoes, the new series will be set in 1936.
Miss Thomas said: ‘In the original series Mr Bellamy was quite an influential MP and King Edward VII came to dinner.
‘This house remains in Belgravia, it remains at the hub of the empire – we’re going to have politicians and royalty passing through.’
The show is set to be aired later next year with a full series possibly following in 2011.
